Nicaragua’s Winter has Begun!

Winter in Nicaragua’s Pacific Southwest means average daily temperatures ranging from 86 to 72 degrees. Not a bad gig, when you consider some of the high summer temperatures experienced elsewhere! The evening showers have also turned the tropical forest into a vibrant green with that “jungle” appearance that so many folks find attractive. The breezes are just right, and the ocean is a perfect temperature. Green season is here. Welcome to the tropics!

This beautiful region of Nicaragua continues along a continuous improvement path, both with public and private investment.


The new San Juan del Sur port and jetty improvement project is in full swing (seen above), with rough site-work completed, and construction of the administrative and tourist buildings currently underway. Another important city project is the underground utility, sidewalk, streetlight and paving project on the roads adjacent to the central market (seen below). Now nearing completion, this project will enable the separation of pedestrians and vehicles on the busiest streets of the village.


Individuals and developers have contributed “big time” to to the continuous improvement approach, as well. In addition to a new boutique residential development, existing developments are releasing new lots and improving and expanding their infrastructure. And new residential options are now available as a response to popular demand. Last year, individual owners were busy designing their tropical dream homes, as evidenced by numerous custom homes currently under construction all over the area this year.


Last week’s 163rd annual fiesta patronales celebration of St John the Baptist, the patron saint for SJdS, was as colorful and fascinating as ever. Celebrations and processions occurred all week in town and culminated in the annual Hipica, which is a lively equestrian parade and party in the center of town…an event that is not to be missed. As usual, some local restaurants have planned July 4th parties (complete with fireworks) for this important US holiday that will be attended by expats and locals alike. There will also be private celebrations, as our social expat community never needs an excuse to celebrate!

Green season may be one of the best times of year in this corner of paradise and now could be the perfect time to visit and experience it first hand. About 2.2 kilometers of road will be paved on the road south of the Municipality of San Juan del Sur to the border with Costa Rica as part of the Coastal Road that began with the construction of the 5 km stretch from El Conteiner to El Socorro. The stretch of road being built is from the local cemetery to El Conteiner and is being executed by the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure MTI, The Municipal Council and The Road Maintenance Fund – FOMAV, as reported on the 27th of  July by Mr. Melvin Jiménez, Project Manager for the Municipality.

Jiménez said the budget designated for the paving of the 2.2 kilometers is 17.5 million Córdobas and explained that the municipality and FOMAV have the responsibility for earth moving adding that the work is built with quality materials that will enable a road that is stable. According to the head of project work is expected to be ready in three months, adding that the construction of ditches and drainage works will be executed by MTI and also clarified that the project has planned for flood mitigation works in those areas where houses are located near the road and are at a low level relative to the road.
